Almost back full time.

There is a very long story as people might imagine, I mean how could I not have any stories for so long?

I'll get to all the details one day, but for now I will just say I got hurt at work, my employer was not good about it at all, and would not let me come back slightly modified (I can fly fine, I can lift patients fine, I just cannot pull out 100+lbs of med bed by myself, sorry....), so I have sat on my ass for a while now.

But...

Good news for me.

The people in charge of getting me back in the workforce recently started that process rolling. And asked me what I'd be interested in. So I jokingly suggested helicopter training since it would be a cool medevac gig, and I really do enjoy the medevac work. I was told that it would be too much money, and to think of other ideas.

Well, the only other idea was an Engineering degree, and I sure didn't feel like going back to school for 4 years, and not flying. But nothing I could do, I was at their mercy.

So, after they finally calculated how much money it would cost to send me to school for 4 years plus pay me my wages the entire time they changed their tune.

And helicopter was submitted as choice number one, as I had pointed out that wasting all my experience would really be pretty stupid.

And has since been approved.

I start in April. First with the conversion to rotary wing. Followed by a Bell 206 rating. And then long line training. And then some time building with what ever I have left.

Even if I end up going back to fixed wing one day I really think that having a rotary wing license would be kick ass.

So off to try the fling wing side of life. Should be an interesting adventure! ;)

Hey Dagny,

so glad to see you back. Back injuries suck big time. I went through the hurt-at-work-retrain stuff 24 years ago and it was, in retrospect the best thing that ever happened to me.

Best of luck...but fling wing ;-)

Done my time there too - make sure you protect your ears and keep us posted on the adventure.

Happy 2009.

Thanks Mike!!

And yeah, I figure my left ear is half deaf from the damn mu2, so now I can work on making them even...LOL

But actually, I appreciate the warning, I really need to get on installing that noise reduction kit on my 13.4......

And yeah...flingwing..just wanted to stay in the air!!!!!

Might be time to chuck the 13.4s and go with the big guns. Hit those guys for a headset!

I use a pair of H10.56HXL DCs - made for helicopters...just use an adaptor in fixed wings.

They have much more passive protection than the 13.4s - 27db vs 23 I think and the active is very good as well. You come home feeling fresh rather than battered to death!

No...I don't work for DC but I abused my ears as a kid and it's not worth being deaf and grumpy - grumpy on its own is enough ;-)

Thanks for the tip Mike.

I really do need to protect my ears, they aren't as good as they used to be anyway after 5 years in the mu2...

I'll see what I can swing, otherwise I'll fork out the money, my ears are far more important than my bank account.

Yay - Good to have you back

Sorry to hear about your problems and the non cooperative (ex?) employer but you sound quite chipper - and that's good too .

I look forward to following your progress - be lucky and yeah - take care with your hearing - it creeps up on you

Thanks Dafydd. :)

And I will. I had my ears tested during an interview process 3 years ago, and I discovered then that they were NOT like they used to be. Freaked me out actually.

I may request that special chopper headset.....my ears are very important to me.
